My Johnson Seahorse 10 Hp -58 (QD 19) has no spark.
Before I dive under the flywheel, are the any other possibly spots to investigate. Is that rubber pushbutton below the jet adjustment a stop button? Does the motor have to be in neutral to be started?

Mr Jonsson

Re: Johnson without spark

I don't know if your '58 has it, but if there are any wires coming from up underneath the flywheel disconnect and isolate them from everything. By the sounds of it you do have a kill switch, which is what those wires should lead to. If you've still got no spark, it's time to pull the flywheel.

To remove the flywheel, I use a 'harmonic balancer puller' used for American cars. You also need three long 1/4inch-20tpi (this is an American/Imperial bolt size, tpi is 'Threads Per Inch') bolts to go with it. Here's a picture of one:

If the coils have cracks in their insulation, they'll need to be replaced. Have a look at Tom Travis' site on setting up the magneto plate. It's the same as his 5.5hp and 3hp:
(I wouldn't try his flywheel removal method though. I much prefer to use the proper tools)

Re: Johnson without spark

Thanks.
I have tried the simple removal method on B/S lawnmower engines and sometimes the flywheel releases just with a light tapping but other times it has to be a puller.
Just have to find these 1/4inch-20tpi bolts (maybe on my British cars??) Here in Sweden everything is mostly metric

No trouble. I don't know if things are much better here (Canada) since it's sort of half-metric land. Good luck finding those bolts. If it's any help, that's called a UNC (Unified National Series) thread bolt.

It is possiable to drill and retap flywheel to a metric size bolt.

Anyone got any problem with the kill switch?

I've never had one go. Did disconnecting it return spark?

Haven't made any serious investigation yet.
All my time goes to reading this forum and arguing with you boat people. :)
