How do you know the year model, My boat has model J150STLESB , SERIAL# R08581859 But I don't know the year model. I had one reply that said it was a 1990. Is this correct? It has an oil injection system on it and should I remove and go to mixing with gas? I have heard stories about problems with older units. I have just bought this boat and would like to keep it running for awhile and Have very history on this motor. The motor at this time is running very well.

1990 sounds correct.
omc used
I-N-T-R-O-D-U-C-E-S
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-0
as the year code sometime after 1980.
-
the ES is the model year.

to bcstexas

Minority Opinion: I have never understood why an outboard could not have an oil pan lubrication system like cars, trucks and inboards, but apparently that is not to be.

The VRO seems to be an attempt to solve an environmental problem by introducing the oil at variable rates.

The problem seems to be reliability. This issue is never going to be resolved as long as people like me are running motors for 5,000 hours on pre-mix and 25+/- year-old motors without a problem, while virtually new motors are blowing up around us because of failures in lubrication systems.
When I feel comfortable taking the kids out on the Ocean, which I do now, I will repower.

In the meantime, I will continue to remove the VRO systems. I did that this past summer on my nephew's 1994 OMC turbojet after it blew up.
