Re: jon boat

That really depends on what you use your boat for, Cougar.

Is your jon a tiller or does it have remote steering? What engine?

For fishing, add a bow mount troller and a mini-console for SONAR and maybe a GPS. A plywood sole coated with Rhino-Liner type stuff would be more comfortable and quieter.

Re: jon boat

Here's a few ideas from what I did to my jon boat. My intentions were to make the ultimate stealth fishing rig and making the aluminum hull quiet was a top priority. Some might not agree with the carpet and foam, but I don't think you will find a quieter jon boat.

I opened up the middle and stern seats, chopped out the floatation block, rolled the edge over and installed sheet foam to replace some of the foam removed. Installed 5/8" seat lids, swivels and folding seats. Decks were made from 3/8" plywood, foamed underneath and held in place with screws so they are removable for cleaning and drying when they get soaked. The left side in the top pic you can see a rod holder base I made from an all-thread nut and piece of square tube. Roofing membrane was installed onto the bare aluminum hull to help reduce the tinny sound of the hull. The green carpet is from Lowes and pretty inexpensive, they did have some nice looking hunter green also.

I also installed an electrical switch panel, navigation lights, bilge pump, courtesy lights, fish finder, and trolling motor electrical connection studs.

Re: jon boat

Dark colored carpet will get hot during the summer, but light carpet will stain easily, so there is good and bad to each. Be aware that carpet will be harder to clean, get stinky and retain water (think rot if using wood) so other types of deck coverings are favorable; vinyl, paint, etc.

BTW, my jon is a 1436.

Re: jon boat

I had a 12' jon, your gonna want to watch what you put in it as they are really sensative to weight.

Get it out a couple time and when you say,"Man, I wish I had..." then put that on it.

Hey running cougar. Your PMs are turned off. Shoot me an email at EDIT, or better yet, turn your PMs on, and shoot me a one, so I know you have them on.

Re: jon boat

Cougar try this idea, get your decks or deck done with just plywood,3/4 " fit it,drill all the holes where your bolts will go through.get a gallon of gelcoat,3 quarts of white, and 1 quart of black,it will come with hardner.Get your plywood,it can all be done off the boat, mix all the gelcoat together,it will be a slate grey color, but only mix 1 quart at a time.Use a roller and do the bottom and the edges first on a bucket,or stand.it is best to have all the wood ready to go so that you can use all the mixed stuff up.Do all the bottoms, and edges first.Let them dry overnight.Use a good coat,or 2 lighter ones. Then turn them over and do the tops the next day.Now when you do the tops you want to use more gelcoat. And you want to have a couple handfuls of clean sand for this. When you are done applying the gelcoat, chuck some sand on ther, just lightly. You will love the color, and no slipping what soever, and all your wood will be water tight. It will cost you maybe $60.00 total.Cheap too.

Hi Coug,

If you do a search in this forum on "jon boat", you will find enough reading material
to last through the weekend. Good learning activity, and fun!

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=242553&highlight=mickjetblue

I put in a link to a post where I had a couple of pics showing the inexpensive floor
boards that I put in my jon boat. Maybe will give you some ideas. There are lots of
other posts with other ideas for jon boats, too. Maybe someday you might post some
pics of what you have done with your boat, and offer tips for others.

Good luck with your boat work!

Re: jon boat

A 1232 jon is pretty small probably rated for about 300lbs capacity (2people @ 145# each.)and 3 hp.
I sure would not add any more weight than absolutely necessary.
Think up a catchy name and put it on the side in big bold leters. My big green Crestliner is "the incredable HULK" as written in big white letters.
