What could cause a steady whistle just after ignition is turned on? I just filled up the oil tank.<br />I also had to be towed when the engine would't start.<br />What should I check first to fix it?

Water Pump or Oil pump is a good start. You perhaps did not run it with the alarm whistle did you? If so, the no start may not be good.

Sorry, I didn't finish the message. I probably know less than you but I do know that when water flow stops via the water pump impeller or otherwise a whistle alarm will sound just like it does when your oil flow stops. Is that the sound and better wait with someone with more experience with outboard motors.

The alarms don't measure water flow, the measure heat in the engine heads, but if your alarm is sounding without even starting the motor then you either have a faulty sensor, oil/heat/fuel restriction or your horn itself is bad. You can unplu the sensors one at a time to find the bad one. If none of them kill the alarm then I suspect the horn.

Your 1998 motor should have the 4 warning lites either on the tach or on a separate 2" gauge. Which light is illuminated when the whistle sounds?<br /><br />If you don't have the 4 lites, then you may not have a 1998 motor, as they were required since 1996. What is the motor's complete model number?

After your last comment, I probably know the answer but let us know the outcome.

Then you better recheck your model #.<br />If it is indeed a '98 the model# would end in "EC", not "CC"<br />Need to be sure to begin the troubleshooting process.

The year is designated by the 3rd & 4th letters.<br />This motor is a 1998

Damn, I screwed up and didn't "see" the letter E before the 2 "C's". You've got a '98 motor, not an '88 and should have the 4 warning lites on the tach or on a separate 2" gauge on your dash.<br /><br />Are you sure that the last letter is a " C " as that is not shown in the parts guide, just and " E " and an " M " are listed as the last letter for 1998.<br /><br />On '96 and later SystemCheck equipped motors, the electronics for the alarm system and "horn" are inside the gauge, and that is usually the problem when weird signals are present.
