i have a Johnson td-20 it is leaking gas badly from the top of the carb through a small hole. what could cause this problem?

Dont worry, you are not alone. I have had many of these leak on me.

If your carb drips fuel all the time, you have a float problem. This could be due to a stuck/corroded float pin, float too heavy,etc...

If it only drips when you press down on the primer pump, then you need the leather primer seals. (yes I said leather). These are available from an AOMCI member.

I would clean the carb parts entirely and recoat the float.

Just not too many coats! Been there, done that.

I got overzealous coating my TN float with dope, and dunked her 4 times thinking the more the better. Forgot that I was adding weight, and all I got was a leaky carb to due a heavy float.

I have had a few with seized float pins as well, but that is all covered in the link provided.
