1982 merc 90 H.P.inline 6, Engine has jumped timing marks from 6:00 clock position to 1:00 clock position looking from front of engine. Will not start, was running ok on muff before this time jump thing.I turned flywheel clockwise until piston was 0.464 inch(12mm)BTDC". pointer was aligned with .464BTDC mark on flywheel as manual stated, no change.Advancing or retarding manually while cranking makes little diference and does not get my marks near the pointer so I can get the corect timing marks aligned. Was hoping someone could tell me what my problem could be and what to do to remedy this. Thanks

Hey wet line....not an expert on Mercs, but check the flywheel key. May have broke on ya and let the flywheel slip.

Re: Jumped out of time

Thanks for the quick reply guys , but to my knowledge,I agree with echozula about it not having a flywheel key , I took the flywheel off and saw the stator and part of the trigger which looked fine, saw no flywheel key, dont have a dist pulley cover to pull off, its equipped with a solid-state, capacitor discharge ignition system consisting of trigger coils, stator, switch boxes and ignition coils.Could I possible have a broken wire from the trigger to switchbox causing this timing delima for me?, I just don't know,I feel it has a simple fix ,I just don't know where to start troubleshooting. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

Re: Jumped out of time

sorry wetline when you said it jumped time i assumed it was the distributor type....should have known by the year... anyway there is a small black box (idle stabilizer) red, white, black wires coming out of it disconnect them from the switchbox and retry
