Re: Water in gear oil 72 mercury 650

You will have to get a the special tool and pull out the carrier set up and replace the seal. If thats the only place its leaking then the prop shaft seal and a O ring is all you need.

Hi new at this, know this is an old forum, but hope you can still help. What tool are you talking about. I have the same 1072 650 and one day it just started jumping out of gear when i gave throttle. I replace the prop, still bad. people told me it was worn forward gear and clutch. Took lower unit off but can't don't know how to get the gears out. Also this all started when a guy "fixed" my control linkage at motor. Any answers?

it sounds like the linkage is not adjusted correctly, have you got a manual and looked at that your self

Robert Gross, :welcome: to iboats. Nice to have you aboard...

Since this engine was running without jumping out of gear before the linkage was touched, then I would certainly think that your linkage is not properly adjusted as well. So before disassembling anything, check the linkage adjustments according to the factory engine specific shop manual. Don't buy an after market version because they are too broad in their subject material and not specific enough for such adjustments. JMHO!

Can you explain to me how it works. How would mis-adjusting these levers make it jump out of gear once you try to throttle up? I do have a downloaded manual and believe it is call Remote Control attachment, shift lever and throttle.

I have a Kiekaefer - Mercury OB 1966 - 1974 SM manual which I downloaded, is this no good? Where would i get a specific manual for my engine?

If the manual is the one I'm thinking it is, it will be fine. Some manuals just aren't available anymore and while factory manuals are nice to have, they are not always necessary. Shift cable adjustment is not rocket science.

GA Boater and Read Admiral, thanks for the info. Will try to rebuild the water pump this weekend and replace some seals near the shift shaft and bottom of pump. This is what I get for trying to buy an old boat and expecting it to work properly. Purchased for $1,800, now in over $4,000 and still have not been in the water but once in 1 year, Been out 7 times, just not getting past the buoys before a melt down.
