jumps out of gear

Bo a 1987 bayliner omc 5.0L one owner took it to the lake was doing 45mph for about a hour running great thin it jumped out of gear and smear like oil or rubber was burning it would still go real slow? can anyone help

Sounds like the coupler failed. Engine will have to come out.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard,... I agree with Bruce, sounds like ya blew the coupler,....

It's what joins the motor to the drive, at the flywheel,....

Probably caused by mis-alignment, possibly from a rotten transom, or motor mounts,....
