Jury duty - The aftermath

I'm headed off to jury duty tomorrow and am kind of excited about it. I have no idea what to expect. I've always opted out of it in the past, but here, more than most places, I think a person who isn't a career criminal (or raising one) should be on a jury or two.

Anyone have any good jury duty stories?

Re: Jury duty tomorrow

I had grand juror duty last year. I was in the court room with about 500 random prospective jurors. When you check in they randomly assign you a number, call those numbers off 1 by 1, and you meet with the judge and they ask you questions to see if you would be a good juror.
The guy infront of me in line pulled number 350 something and Fbombed right there, he was promptly detained and found in compemt of court. $100 fine for him.
I pulled lucky number 7 :)

Its my understanding that people were there till 7 or 8 that night. Just getting interviewed.

Re: Jury duty tomorrow

I received a jury summons 2 months ago and we were instructed to call in the evening before to see when you need to report. My number was instructed not to show up and they would be reassigning my jury duty, I had no idea what that meant as they could reassign it in a week or 3 years? 2 weeks later I received another jury summons...

Kind of a PITA as I had to schedule a day off work for the first summons, and now I'll have to schedule another day... I wished there was a "Double Jepordy" clause for jurors :D

The guy infront of me in line pulled number 350 something and Fbombed right there, he was promptly detained and found in compemt of court. $100 fine for him.

Last time I was pulled in for jury duty, another prospective juror was joking with me that he was going to say he had Tourrettes Syndrome. I guess he was lucky he didn't follow through... *@%*#+#@*%

Well jeez, being a juror isn't sounding 1/2 as fun, now. I just hope I'm not chosen for some multi-month case.. that would suck.

Re: Jury duty tomorrow

Good luck and bring some good reading material. I had it two summers ago and as unpolitically correct as it is to say...it was the biggest waste of 2 weeks of my time ever. They sent us down in a basement below ground level out of cell range and you sit while they toubt civic duty and rules on us. Very few got called into a trial since most people pled out. When I finally got called in, the judge asks all kinds of personal questions of everybody. People were forced to admit in front of a large group of having comitted crimes or in several instances having been the victims of sexual assault, etc. The person on trial pled out. Seeing the legal system (or anything government) close up like that is a frustrating experience. By the end of the two weeks you could look around the jury pool and you knew way too much about people. That said I have spoken to people who had a much better experience.

"The complete Guide to Home Brewing" it is :)

It came with my home brewing kit and I wondered if I'd ever talk myself into reading it. Perfect opportunity.

Re: Jury duty tomorrow

I happily served on a DUI trial jury in January of 2007. It was 1.5 days and was fun. We found the defendent guilty of 3 of the 4 counts, and had a nice little discussion about how poorly the traffic cop did his job. But that cop thinks he's the best, cause he is the one who caught Ali al-Marri, on a routine traffic stop just after 9-11.

My first jury duty I was picked. It was a sanity case.. The guy murdered his mother..We found him sane and sent him on to his trial and I never heard what happened..Next was an injusy on the job..Railroad..He was suing for $750,000....He got $7,500...His lawyer wasn"t to happy.....Third jury I was on was assult and battery on a federal officer...He was guilty and got 30 days..I think that was it for me..Have been called a couple times since but never got called out of the jury room to go to a court..Take some reading material and go with the flow...It"s almost better to get on a case I think...Can be interesting..

I've done it a couple of times and always found it interesting. Boring, yes. But once you're seated on a case it can get real interesting - especially since we are small town and everybody knows everybody.

Besides that, it was cool to meet fellow jurors and get to know them pretty well. The attorneys were a. realllllly bad b. really good. So that was an eye opener as well. Ya know, in case I ever need one, or something.

I'd do it again.

Well lowkee, looks like you are now officially employed by the state!! If you don't want to serve just ask a lot of questions during the interview. You will scare off either the prosecution or the defense, and they will get you dismissed.

Re: Jury duty tomorrow

It's boring. If you don't want to do it tell them when you are questioned that if someone is charged with something then they must be guilty !!!

Just my little joke !!!

OMG! Being ordered to not discuss my day with my wife is like pulling teeth! We naturally converge every evening and talk about our day.. and here I'm ordered not to until the case is over... AHHH. Not that anyone will likely ever know.. but knowing my luck..

So far pretty decent experience, though. Nothing like what was described by some others. We had cafe seating, pool table, foosball, arcade games (even classic centipede) and PC's w/net access. Top notch for jury sequestering area.

 All we had was a dimly lit, stark gray room, barely big enough to fit a conference table and a dozen chairs... I though we were the ones in prison

Re: Jury duty tomorrow

I did jury duty about three years ago on a domestic assault case. Went in not knowing what to expect but a little unsure about deciding the fate of at least part of another persons life.
What an eye opener! I was very impressed by the professionalism of the Judge, Prosecutor, and Defense Attorney.
In the end it was a unanimous decision and VERY easy for me to make.
All in all a very worthwhile experience. And at the least I got to feel I had done my civic duty.

Please read the guidelines!!! We don't allow posts on this topic . . .

I love Jury Duty. Two years ago, I was foreman in a Federal case involving a Prison inmate who attacked a couple of guards. We found him guilty. I was very proud of our system over the few days it lasted. Great experience. I didn't want it to end.
