94 Spectrum, Mercruiser Alpha One 135 hp.

I'm having a problem with the ignition. Many times when I turn the key, all I hear is a single click. When I try a number of times, I'll eventually get it to turn over.

At first, I thought maybe it was because the ignition module wasn't quite tight in the boat console, but I tightened the nuts so that it doesn't twist when I turn the key, and I get the same thing. I haven't experienced the point where I can't get it to turn over eventually, but am afraid I'm going to get stuck somewhere.

Battery is fine. Solenoid problem? Should I replace the ignition? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Verify the battery terminals are clean and tight. Also verify that all of the connections to the ignition and starter are tight. Sounds like there maybe a loose connection.

Also check the cannon plug for the wiring harness. Undo the clamp and disconnect it. It may be loose or corroded. If it looks clean, push it back together and tighten the clamp.

slave solenoid (if you have one)or starter solenoid, depending on which one is clicking. if it was starter, you should hear a clunk as the drive gear engages the flywheel but doesn't turn engine.

Re: Just a click when turn key

Had that problem about 18 months ago. Turned out to be a steel link on the starter motor solenoid had rusted though. This link feeds the "pull" windings in the solenoid. Once the solenoid has pulled in, the "hold" windings (that use less power) take over. It took me hours to find and minutes to fix. You will need to pull the starter motor out to check it. Just verify that you have 12 volts running to the starter before pulling it out.

Chris...........
