Hello Starcraft Boats group! I have been lurking on this site as well as some others for quite a while now trying to decide what I really wanted to do about getting a boat. Based on the threads I have read here I have been looking for a starcraft project boat. I found one a couple of weeks ago and just concluded the sale today. I am looking forward to this project and working with the rest of you as I progress.

The boat is a 69 Jupiter 16'. When new, it was an I/O but at some time in it's past it was modified to use an outboard. I have been driving by it for a couple of years now. It was parked beside the owners house and I had not seen any evidence that it had been moved in all the time I have noticed it. I could not tell anything about the boat but decided to drive over and take a look inside. I introduced myself to the lady of the house and asked for permission to take a look at it. When I saw the condition I decided that this was something I could work with. I asked her if she would be interested in selling and she called her husband. He had actually been thinking about hauling it to a scrap aluminum facility but agreed that I could buy it for the value of it as scrap.

As of tonight I have it in my driveway and am ready to begin work. My first job will be making an outboard motor stand so that I can take the outboard off and be able to work on the boat.

I will post pictures soon since I know that you guys like to see the starting point as well as progress.

Welcome to iboats TinHat Squadron, LB. Curious - What scrap value did the PO agree to? I don't think Jupiters came in an I/O flavor. Pictures will tell the tale. I have been wrong a few times. Regardless - have fun re-doing and splashing.

Welcome aboard LB! Sounds like you got an excellent deal if it was the price of scrap!

I estimated the weight at 300lbs and e-mailed a local recycler for their rate. They told me it would be about .55/lb so I rounded up and gave him 200.00, we were both good with that. I based the I/O assumption on the title which says that the model is Jupiter 10 and the motor make is Mercruiser 80hp. The transom is sure set up for an outboard but I assumed that if it was an I/O at some point in it's earlier life then the transom had been replaced.

At this point it probably does not matter, I wanted an outboard anyway.

Thanks for the encouragement.

For $200 you got a fabulous deal. No way you could go wrong on this one. Hope the pic probs get fixed in the forum soon. We have a few Jup restos in progress or finished. We'll move some stuff around to make room in the drydock.

Hey a fellow Jupiter owner !! Looks like an interesting project and a neat stern conversion from IO to IB!! Nothin' that a little elbow grease and tlc won't turn into a thing of beauty --- and you are already starting right with bottom feeder purchase $$!!!!

Keep us posted on progress!

Welcome! Had lots of fun on our Jupiter before getting two-foot-itis. Very stable. I think you'll love it.

Re: Just bought 69 Starcraft Jupiter project boat

Thanks for all of the encouragement. Got all of the hardware off, removed decking screws, they were not stainless, cleaned it up inside and am azazed at the condition of the hull. No loose rivets that I could tell, no holes and no pitting. I used a chemical paint remover and spot tested a few areas on the bottom of the hull. The aluminum is fantastic under the paint. I will be using this boat primarily in Ontario on the French River, this is a very rocky body of water and I always end up with pretty good scratches to the hull. I was wondering if anyone would like to give me their thoughts of leaving the outside unpainted after stripping all of the other paint off. If that is a reasonable option would you put anything on the aluminum such as wax etc?

Thanks

Shark Hyde and sonus alum polish are the two that seamed to be used the most. Key is to clean the hull really well before applying either. Sh is more expensive and lasts longer. Sonus
is cheaper and easier to apply but does not last as long. Really is a personnel pref...
