Hi i just bought a 1994 fisher 220 freedom pontoon that had a blown motor, i know it says the max hp is 75hp. i was wondering what would happen if i put a 90 or 115hp in it . i don't know anything boat boats its my first one. does it have to do with hp or weight of the engine that the boat can hold.
thank you any help would be appreciated

HP ratings have to do with the torque the engine puts on the transom, an engine is effectively a big lever, it is attached at the top with force applied to the bottom, obviously the bigger the engine the more torque it puts on the transom.

The actual weight of the engine is irrelevent, if it can hold on throttle it can hold being static.

What would happen if you overpower is at some point, normally under full throttle, the transom would break and you would have an engine running wide open attached to nothing but some cables, something you never want to see.

Stay with the 75 horse rating.

I would not overpower, the post above mine is correct and If you ever have an accisent or a claim against your insurance company it could lead into big problems, when you start going against the Mfg. rated specs.

While the static weight of the motor isn't a threat to the transom adding 80 lbs to the very stern of the boat could change the handling and make it sit a little deeper.
On a smaller boat boat this could really change things.Like adding a small adult right at the transom.Going to a 115 might add 5 mph at an increase in fuel use of about 4gph(gallons per hour) at wot(wide open throttle)
Stick with a carefully setup 75.

For future reference, call Fisher. The same horsepower warning was on my 200 Freedom DLX. But a 90 horsepower 2 stroke Mercury was installed at the factory. The Fisher representative told me this was a common occurence. Fisher also tests different propellers to find the best combination before their boats are sold.
