I have been towing my Crownline 180BR with a GMC Envoy for two years while I looked for a vehicle I would really like to have to tow with. The Envoy did a fine job too and I have no complaints, but my wife never liked it at all. I bought it just to hold me over and it did fine.

But I just bought a 2003 Toyota 4Runner Limited with the 4.7L V8 engine. Only has 95K on the clock and I got it for $10.5K. What a deal. Seriously this thing has every option available as far as I can tell. It's even setup with the electronic brakes for towing a camper.

I know it's not a 4X4 since I can't lock in in 4WD, but it does have the 4Low option and it has an option to lower and raise the vehicle. It also has some Downhill feature that have no idea what that does.

It's dark blue with taupe interior which will look nice towing Lil Red, and I will also be much more willing to drive it regularly as a daily driver and keep the Volvo in the garage. Also just bought the wife a 2006 BMW 330XI so she can't complain.

You must be my almost twin as I have a 2004 4Runner Limited and a 2006 330i!

That V8 is just broken in at 95k miles. However, unless it was just done, your engine is due to have the timing and serpentine belts replaced. The water pump is normally done at the same time as everything is out of the way to do it. The engine is an interference engine and if the belt breaks it is bad news. Nothing to freak out about, just stay on top of things. You will also want to make sure the driveshaft and u-joints have been regularly lubed. If you notice a "clunk" when slowing down for a stop that is an indication it is time for a lube job.

And yes that 4Runner is a real 4wheel drive. It also has a center locking differential!

T4r is great. I'm on it everyday. The V8, at least my 2004, comes with a oil cooler and a trans cooler. Very nice. The auto-down back window is great at the ramp. Can't believe other SUV's don't have that feature. 2' of snow? Lets go for a ride!

Re: Just Bought A 4Runner!

I towed for the first time with my 4Runner Thursday night. It feels a lot different than the Envoy. When actually on the road towing you can hardly tell the boat is there. It's like the acceleration is the same as with nothing behind it. But when manuevering the boat into the garage and on the ramp, I could see the boat better in the Envoy. Probably just a matter of getting used to something different. Sure has the boat sitting up higer in the front.
