well i made an impulse buy on a 23 ftsea ox thats down in mexico. saw it last year and thought it looked pretty good but didn't give it a great look over. my dad took it out for a test drive and the old volvo i/o runs pretty good. i have owned boats but not this old or i/o. what should i do to make sure its up to par? service, grease, leg oil,? i have done a little reaserch and they look like rock solid hulls.

Impulse buy and boats usually don't go along with each other very well. Hopefully, it will work out for you. If not, there's a ton of good folks here that will help you get it straightened out. When you get it, snap some pictures and show off what you have!

I was wanting to get a decent used cabin cruiser for going to the lake and camping/fishing on the water for a few weeks at a time. I would go as big as 27 feet because thats the biggest one I could find that is still 8.5 ft beam, Sea Ray 270 Sundancer, um I think it was a 97 model. Basically thats all I would want it for, is to get out of town for a few months in Winter and maybe a few weeks in the Summer and just park it on the lake and sleep. Lol. Any opinions? :)

i had my dad and his buddy look it over. the transom and floor are strong and no soft spots. from what i found on the net about sea ox's is there only draw back is that some older ones in the water alot or from humidity get soft floors or transoms. this one is solid.

Re: just bought an old 85 sea ox i/o . now what?

well i just got home with the boat. she pulled great for the 2200 mile drive. got it out for a few hours. motor ran great other than coming into the dock. a cotter pin broke on the drive right when i put it into reverse and gave it gas to slow my approach. slammed into a boat but didn't cause any major damage. anyways, its got a 290 drive and a volvo 350. both look to be origional. plug wires and points seem to look new but other than that it all has origional paint on it. wireing is a nightmare but thats something i can fix myself. i plan on dropping oil in both the engine and drive of the big motor as well as the 15hp honda kicker. pulling the impeller on the water pump and inspecting it as well as all the plugs and doing a compdression test. what else should i look at for the drive and motor?
as far as the hull it looks pretty good. i gave it a good washdown but don't know what i should be using as far as wax or how to refinish it(i have only owned aluminum boats). the interiour fiberglass seems to be in good shape other than some surface cracking. the floor is solid as well as the transom and from an untrained eye the stringers look good. wood all needs a good refinishing. any tips or advice on what else i should be doing or looking at would be welcomed.

old sea ox hulls have a good reputation, both for longevity and seaworthiness.

The broken cotter pin is a reason not to use reverse as a brake. I know first time in a boat especially a big one it's hard to know its momentum.

Agreed as to paperwork. Job 1. No papers on a boat that size, may as well scuttle it.
