Hi guys, I know I am a newb. This will only be my second year boating, but with this forum I have learned tons of things and am appreciative. Anyway, I got a new to me boat last month as I wanted to go bigger than my first boat last year. Picked a '89 Starcraft 17' bowrider. Boat is in pretty good shape. The motor is a '90 Evintude 100xp. I have already started a couple threads with questions about it.

So this year I decide to have a Marina service the boat hoping I would be all set for the beginning of the boating season, the Stripers are starting to run also. I bring the boat in asking to get the water pump done and to have the motor looked over to make sure everything was running right. I get a call when they were doing the pump to let me know that my steering system was bad. I just thought it was locked up in the tube where it runs through the motor. Nope was all shot. Told them as long as nothing else major was wrong to go ahead and do it as I don't have unlimited funds and was more concerned with the motor being up to par. Figured worse case I would do a lot of reading and replace the steering myself.

I went and picked it up today and was told it ran fine on muffs. New water pump, steering, and gear oil......bang $750. This evening I took the motor cover off to find what looks like the VRO unit leaking all over the place at the seams. Check the pics. Oil residue even coming down motor leg. Seems to me they never even took the cover off. Unless I am wrong and its really not that bad? What do you guys think? I don't think I will be boating by this weekend like I had planned.

Mostly on the VRO and all around it. Back of the carbs and collecting underneath. The seams of the unit looknpretty wet. Do the carbs usually leak while tilted like my old Chrysler outboard did? I know the motor was probably tilted for over a week while there.

Hard to tell just where the leak is coming from. I'd agree that it's probably not a good thing. Appears to be a slow one, but still significant enough to be of concern. I see that your oil and fuel lines have the factory-installed "ty-wrap" clamps. Have never been a fan of them, as they can loosen up with age. Bombardier sells "snap clamps" are a good solution to replace the ty-wrap clamps. I'd probably cut the ty-wraps clamps off and replace them all, then see if you still have any leaks in either the oiling or fuel systems. You don't need to be a marine tech to perform this task.

The last picture is the rear of the VRO. That's where it is worst around that seam. A little part of that gasket was sticking out of the top and it pretty much just pulled right off. Like it was deteriorated pretty bad. Thinking I will try to delete the oil side of the pump and see if it helps.

Took a quick look at the fuel lines tonight and think I found the leak. On the fuel line coming out of the top of the VRO going to the carbs it feels like there is a hole on the back side where it has been rubbing on the unit. Going to pick up some new fuel line tomorrow afternoon and replace all the lines on the motor. Hoping that's where all that residue is coming from.

Good catch. When you go to replace the fuel lines under the cowling, you'll have to be careful. Some of the hoses are just bulk fuel hose. Three of those hoses make very sharp bends. You can't use regular "bulk" hose in those locations. Bulk hose tends to kink when bent into sharp corners-restricting flow. Those hoses with extreme bends are specially heat-formed at the factory and carry special individual part numbers. Get the factory hose replacements.
