If this seems long winded I apologize now. Yesterday, March 8th my son and I went on a fishing trip. The day was positively beautiful and on the way to the lake My son, Dave Jr. commented on what a great day the Lord had given us. We only caught one fish but had a wonderful day. The lake we fished was new to us and the trip was mostly a scouting venture anyway. It was my first run of my new to me Sea King motor (Thanks to all of you who gave advice and help in getting it up to speed). We spent all day on the water only breaking for a nice dinner at a great steak house and then headed home about 5:00 PM All day both of us were light of heart and just counting our blessings and feeling blessed.

When we got back to my house Dave Jr. had to hurry up as he had a late night college class at 7:30. He told me as he left he would be back at around 9:30 after his class and we would set up some preparation for another trip we were going to take today. He said he wanted to help get everything ready and just spend some time with his mother and I ( He is in the Army and is possibly deploying soon).

About 9:00 pm my cousin and his wife came for a visit and I was expounding the days events to them when the call came in about 9:45 pm. Dave Jr, on his way back from class was passing a semi on the interstate. as he pulled along side his left front tie rod dropped. The wheel, completely out of control caused his truck (2000 Dodge Dakota) to spin out at 70 Mph. Dave Jr. himself made the call to his mother. He told her that he was ok just rattled. His Girlfriend picked him up and brought him back to our house and he and I talked until midnight. After all the details were told and the anxiety subsided I told him He was very fortunate that Jesus was ridding with him. He looked at me and said "Dad He was DRIVING"! Lots of emotions went through all of us. Fear, Relief, Etc. With all this said, something I would like to pass on to all of our friends out there, Dave Jr's accident could have ended in tragedy just as easily. God truly had his hands on the wheel.

The sheer mechanics of the incident prove that (to me anyway). I myself have been a little lax on buying a new tire when one is getting worn or putting off some small maintenance on my old truck. I am also guilty of having a few quickie inspections done, Never again! I would really like have everyone be aware that these procrastinations are trouble going begging. I would never think to drive a vehicle with an obvious problem, and as of last night my eye for detail got much more focused.

I would really like to recommend to everyone if there is a small maintenance issue on a vehicle get it fixed regardless of how minor it may seem. Have those trucks and cars and boats checked out regularly. Today is a great day. Dave Jr. is getting his truck fixed as I type this but just as well it could have been the worst day ever. God Bless You All. Dave Sr.

In your defense, you may not have been able to tell the tie rod was bad by driving. I came in for an oil change on my Explorer and was told the tie rod was about to come apart. I said no way, and had to see it for myself being that I have built several hot rods throughout my life and worked as a wrench in my younger days. I knew I would have felt it going bad long before. To my surprise when I pulled on it it came apart!!! It could have come apart at any time and I would not have known it until it was too late. Thank god that I have a good dealer that actually checks out things. $100.00 spent on both probably save our lives.
