I have bass fished for the best part of 35 years so I beleive I have enough experience to justify what Im going to say.

Most of the time, [not always], if the bait you are using looks like something to eat, and even if it doesnt ressemble anything that the fish has ever eaten and it looks alive, regardless of color, a bass is going to strike at it if for nothing else just to check it out. There are obviously times when this doesnt hold true, but most of the time if they are in a feeding mood and active, it will.

My opion is that a bass is a preadator, its going to eat because its hungrey or something is in its face.put a bait in its face it will eat!at times they do protect there territory but how?they eat whatevers bothering them.i agree with ya ,ld

Re: Just my obsevation! Bass

I have been a tournament bass fisherman for 20 years. Here in the Pacific NW we have Bass that do not comply with the known Southern Bass habits. We don't have have shad in our lakes and the best lakes are on the coast. Instead of Bass going deep in Winter they just go about 10' down in a weedline and stay there. On sunny days they will venture up into less than 1' of water in very heavy cover. During Spring they will be caught mostly in shallow water with heavy cover over them. So we have different baits and techniques than do the southern boys during the same seasonal settings. Over the years I have used everything that came down the pike. Recently I did a 7 day test on the best Bass lake we have here in Oregon; Tenmile. I took Spike-it and colored tubes in some of the most horrific colors you have ever seen. One was Red, White and Blue. I tried to not make the colors appear as local food sources, so the test would be more true. I caught fish of all sizes up to 3# on these stupid things. I even took nail polish and coated one so that it would be hard, but it caught 3 fish about 12" long. So the moral of the story is, a bait looks good to the fisherman, he will fish it harder and better. The fish may or may not care so much. If the lure is supposed to look so lifelike and react lifelike, then why the heck does a spinner-bait catch fish??

It took ya 35 years to come up with that! :p JK yea bass are pred fish and when they feel hungry anthing goes. Ive seen them eat lizards, frogs and birds. It doesnt matter what it is they seem to want to eat it. Although some baits work better at certain times and or in rivers or lakes.

I dont think he ment that the lake is only 10' deep, It actually fluctuates 14 feet from summer low to winter high. Making the deepest place in the lake off Rocky Point about 35' in the late winter. He just ment that the comfort zone may be in the 10' range. He is pretty much right with that statement.

There is some truth to what you are saying, and it will ring true at times, however, there are times when if the fishing is really tough, just the right bait and retreive will catch fish. Its been a long time sense I have been completly skunked, but it has happened.

I havnt been in the lake for about three weeks. The last time I was out the water temp was about 63. I will be on the lake again this coming weekend and we have had some rain and cool evenings. I expect the temp to be down to around 57 by now. I expect the fishing to be tough.

Some guys prefer fishing structure, others prefer topwater, and then there are those that do well on open water. In each arena the angler usually has a "confidence" bait. By this I mean the angler has fished the bait enough to know how the baits action triggers strikes. The confidence in using a specific bait is therefore indeed an element of provoking strikes.
