i just painted my aluminum jon boat , 14 foot by 4 foot. painted bottom and inside. stripped with wire wheel and angle grinder to bare aluminum, coated entire bottom and all rivets with "glove-it" brand sealer, then one coat of "pre-kote" brand . then 3 coats of interlux brand sea blue. with all necesary snading and cleaning between coats.

now paint is really easy to rub off. if i bend over and touch rail with belt buckle, it rubs off. if you touch it with your finger nail, it rubs off....iss there some sort of clear hard cote i can apply to keep it from scrathing and rubbing off so easily?
any help is thankfull...
mike

phatmanmike,

What Interlux paint did you use? If it was Brightside one part epoxy, it will take a couple of weeks to harden up.

I dont know what kind of primer you used, but I know Marine engine manufactures use an etching primer on outboards. It bonds to Aluminum and paint bonds to it very well. I have used it on lower units and never had problems with it pealing. But, we are talkig about your Jon boat though, they dont have to be pretty, I painted mine with a roller and Laquer house paint. But the boat only cast me 20 bucks though

DJ is correct. My Interlux Brightside jobs will smear for weeks. You will be happy with it when it finally dries.

Re: just painted my aluminum boat, now what?

Uh-oh. (sounds of screeching, abrupt halt) It takes a few weeks for the paint to cure up???? I'm in need of a quick education about paint...

I'm planning on painting mine (aluminum) as soon as weather allows. Is there a hardner additive for the paint to make it cure faster?

Is there another brand/type of paint that'll cure up quicker?

It's just a small runabout, but alot of work nevertheless. I see that AWL Grip paint is 2-3 times the cost of the regular topside paints. Is this a different kind of paint?

Man, and just when I thought the paint job would be the EASY part...

Thanks
Rick

The Best,+ Quickest paints are the 2-part Urethanes............

You Could go Boating the next day....
But even so, The paint will still be Harder, with Time............
