Hello everyone,
My dad just bought a 1998 Evinrude, V-4, Model# E90TSLECM for $55.00. The motor is complete from the skeg all the way to the mid section, power head, carbs, the complete motor minus the remote throttle control and shifting and throttle cables. Anyway, is this a good motor and yes we are going to clean out the carbs and change the spark plugs and try to start her up and see how she runs and if she runs good we are going to replace the water pump impellar inside the water pump as well. Just don't want to throw tons of money in it if it isn't any good. We did check to see if she was siezed and she is not, we took out all the spark plugs manually placed it in gear and was able to spin the flywheel over and it felt smooth and we turned the prop and she turns easy and then I place the shift linkage to forward gear and the prop turned a little until it stopped and the same for reverse. Basically the motor was sitting in the floor of a garage that someone left behind when they moved out so hopefully the motor is a good one we hope. What are the reliability of these motors?

Correction, I placed the shift linkage in neutral and the motor flywheel spinned easily with the spark plugs out not in gear I meant. sorry about that.

Sounds good so far; I take your post to say that you can turn the engine over with the flywheel and observe the correct function of the gears.

Before you spend any money on it....do a compression test (you can jump the starter...direct from a battery) , Be sure your plugs are out but grounded. GROUNDED. Very Important that they be grounded; although with jumping the starter you should not have any ignition...but don't take chances on damaging the coils and related $$$$$ ignition parts.

Drain the lower fluid and check for rust and metal and water in there in place of the expected oil.

OMC V4's are great engines; hopefully you have a good one. Post your compression numbers.

If you think it hasn't been run in a long time; I would squirt some oil into the cylinders before the test. It will throw your results off a bit...but you can always re-test later if things seem promising. That will ensure some initial lube when the starter spins it over.

Does anybody know where I can get a good, cheap, complete remote throttle control with the shift/throttle cables with electrical wires for the motor in this posting or for model# E90TSLECM. Thank you for your help. The motor/outboard itself has all the wiring harnesses its just that it did not come with the remote control and electrical, shift and throttle cables and were looking for one at a cheap price. Let me know where I can find one at. Thanks again, Bob

//////UPDATE/////
My dad had to take the outboard to a outboard mechanic he knows personally to figure out why it would not have spark at the spark plugs as the motor is turning over by the starter motor. Anyway, the outboard mechanic said that the outboard is in very good shape and had it running but not that long because it would not pee water out of it. So my dad said that we will replace the water pump impeller, clean the carbs out, which is my responsibility and they will be squeaky clean and every passageway blown threw as well as jets, thermostat kit, and change out the gear lubricant and clean out the fuel tank and replace with fresh new gas/oil mixture. So my dad is very happy and when he gets back from camping this weekend he will be getting the boat restoration going full swing. Looking forward to the journey.

OH, I forgot to say what the mechanic said why the outboard will not crank, Anyway, he had to change out to bad ignition coils and replace the wiring harness. The mechanic said that year outboard won't run if only two ignition coils are working and not all 4 ignition coils.

Allright guys we finally got the $55.00 Evinrude, model E90TSLECM running Awesome. I helped my dad replace the water pump impeller, rebuilt both carbs religiously clean and reinstalled them, installed new thermostat kits and cranked the outbaord the first time and did not get a pee stream so we ended up replacing both head gaskets and exhaust cover gaskets and Walla!!! the outboard pees fine and runs fanstastic on the muffs. we are really happ with this motor and here is a video clip of it running finally. Yippee!!!

Yeap, the boat is already getting restored and the new deck has already been installed on it. Now to find some really nice medium to dark grey marine carpet to put inside of it. Were extremely excited about this restoration project. More to come.

Yeap, we, my dad and I, cannot wait to get this out into the water. There is a strange story to this motor that my dad found out about a week ago. Anyway, I came across this motor by accident, looking at boats on Craigslist and the guy was selling this motor for 200 dollars or best offer in his add and according to him this motor was left from the previous owner of the house the guy had bought. Anyway the motor was left behind and the guy that bought the house with this motor said he wanted it off his property and was going to take it to the scrap yard. Anyway, my dad found out and notified the owner of this motor and the outboard was never titled because it was being used by a tree company down in Louisiana to clear trees from Hurricane Katrina back in 2005 and according to the owner motors/outboards in Louisiana didn't have to be titled and when they were using this outboard down in Louisiana to get the trees out of the water they buried this motor in mud and it overheated so the guy said take it off the boat and get another outboard because I guess they were making big money during the Katrina cleanup. So now my dad is worried that we will not be able to title it in South Carolina. So in a nutshell, this motor has never, ever been titled any state because it was first used in Louisiana and according to the owner it probably had less than 30 hours run time on it. Wish us luck on titling this outboard and it seems like this will be a super runner. according to me and my dad it is ready to hit the water now.

One more thing. You can tell this motor was used around salt water because we broke a few bolts off the heads and the exhaust cover and there was some white powdery stuff inside the thermostats area so we blew out and flushed all of this white powdery stuff out of the power head. If it runs as good as it does in the video this outboard will be a sweet runner.:)

Just be careful--this offer sounds too good to be true. Almost sounds like this motor fell off the back of the delivery truck for some lucky guy to "find" and sell on Craigslist.

Re: Just purchased a 1998 Evinrude, model E90TSLECM dirt, dirt cheap

The maiden test voyage went really well after getting the timing advance under the flywheel adjusted correctly on the outboard and testing out different propellers. At first the boat would only turn 4500 rpm at wide open throttle and then we decided to go to a shoreline at Lake Bowen to swap out props and we had problems with the tilt and trim system but fixed that when we came home and I noticed that the timing advance arm was not adjusted correctly bny the service manual and I adjusted that but I didn't get the lock nut tightened enough and it fell out and noticed the outboard losing power so we went back in to the landing and loaded it back on the trailer swapped props and I adjusted the timing advance link under the flywheel and we put the boat back in the water and what a major difference. Now we are turning 5300 rpms and the motor sounds a whole lot better and ran very, super strong. I told my dad, when the tilt and trim wasn't working at that time that if he trimmed it up it would gain 200 to 400 rpm. So we are very happy with the lake run after tinkering with it and getting dialed in correctly with the prop and the timing advance.I meant the test run of my dad's new to him deck boat. After doing some propeller changes and adjusting the timing advance the 90 horse Evinrude ROARS!!!!!!! with power now.
