This is a solid foundation to work with. has a volvo penta outdrive and I'm assuming the engine was a 302/351 ford. Have not run the numbers on the heads (only part of the engine that was there). Looking over the outdrive unit I see that the steering needs replaced, the rubber sleeve (my terminology is lacking so please bare with me). I do believe the outdrive unit is a 270 but the tag is missing? Its been in salt water and I have not yet inspected the outdrive unit. I am in the Reno area and love to swap and trade. My question is this if i was to remove that outdrive and seek a complete replacement for this 3000 lbs boat. What engine outdrive combo would go in place with the least amount of hassel and cost? Or should I stick with the volvo penta? Also I was thinking of converting this boat over to a sealed cooling system for reliability. yah/nah?

Wel heck, I'm doing purdy darn good for a Wednesday, thanks for askin:)

Hey, so long as you are here in the resto section (iboats drydock) are you feeling certain about the condition of your stringers.foam, deck, and transom?

I suppose there was a reason that engine was pulled out of that boat (could have been frozen and busted, could be the hull has issues).

Just thinking out loud here.

Cheers:)

actually surprisingly the hull and structure cabin floor roof even the teak steps are in great shape for being a 73. even my 1979 sea ray wasn't as structurally as sound as this. I'm in negotiations with a gentalman locally for his whole boat with motor and outdrive. I was just in the hopes of possibly upgrading the whole set up if the chance arose. I threw out there a 1989 honda accord as a trade last night and in come the swarm. I'm in no hurry because boats are being winterized and cars are being needed. thanks again

In response to your original question, The 270 has one of the largest transom holes surpassed only by the OMC stringer drive. The 270 is stout and its only drawback is lack of power trim. If the transom is sound I would stick with VP.

thank you, I was entertaining the thought of a mercruiser set up. Back in 1991 I used to work at the kingman Bayliner plant in final assembly. So I agree that filling that void would no be easy. I'm half way tempted to get super creative and make an electric drive unit. I have the background experience. thanks for the advice so far all.
