Actually it was a completely cleaned head and a NEW head gasket ... Okay, I got everything put back together and she'll start and run.

According to the manual while everything gets established the engine may run rough (and it is), but there's also a knock or tick that I can't quite figure out. When they milled the head they completely cleaned it and replaced the springs, so is that knock/tick something I should expect while the new head gets situated?

I did, at least the way the manual says to - first timer, so I might have done something wrong I suppose.

Ayuh,.... The most common mistake is windin' 'em too tight....

Or, not havin' each cylinder Tdc...

Too tight, 'n the valve don't fully close, causin' a skip...

Too loose, 'n the valve don't fully open, causin' rough runnin', 'n tickin' noises...

I like to install the compression tester and remote crank switch for setting the valves. Once they are in the ballpark, crank the engine and watch compression. tighten the rocker until compression drops (valve hanging open), then loosen the rocker until it rattles. Split the difference. That way you know you are in the middle of the nut's adjustment range. then onto the next cyl.

Went back and did it again ... musta' done something wrong the first time. New question tho: with the valve lash adjusted, the manual says it may run rough for just a little (I've only run it about 10 minutes at this point) and it is running a bit rough. However, I did have to adjust the idle up some, does that make sense? And/or is it okay? Not a major adjustment, but it did need it to keep from stalling out.

Splashed it!

It was buggin' me that I had to adjust the idle (the thing has run fine for 3 years). So I went back at the valves. I started from the back, and when I eased up on the intake of #6, the engine smoothed out and revved up a bit. I went back through all of 'em and at the end only #3 exhaust and #6 intake changed. But, I was able to take the idle back down and button it up.

Took her out to the lake for a little ride (and let the kids and retriever swim) and it ran quiet and smooth. Planed out with no problem. Still not jumpin' outta' the water, but coming on plane without fighting too much now.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled boating season!
