Left the Durango at the dealer this morning for a scheduled oil change service and transmission service. Just spoke with the service tech (I had to call them) who told me that while removing the pan to drain the tranny fluid a bolt head broke off with the rest of the bolt still within the threads. They aren't sure if they will be able to get it done by tonight or sometime tomorrow. She assured me the "shop foreman" is working on it now. They were the last ones to touch those bolts when I had the same service done about 20k miles ago.
What do you think about that?

Sounds like they overtightened it a bit.

Where I worked we had a guy in vehicle repair who complained that all he did was pump gas and change flats, SO, they let him do oil changes, unfortunately the only tool he knew how to use was an air impact wrench. Yup, ruined 7 drain plugs in one day, thay all came back with oil leaks. :'(

How will they get it out? And how will they repair it so it is secure and won't leak?

Keep all your receipts! Just in case the repair comes back to haunt you.

Re: Just wanted to change tranny fluid

Normally to remove a broken bolt they would drill right in the center with a specific size drill and then use an "easy out" to remove the broken bolt. It is a device with extreme reverse threads that will jam into the hole and hopefully remove the bolt. More than likely the tranny case is aluminum in which case they may have crossthreaded the bolt last time which will make the removal a lot harder. Sometimes they have to drill the bolt out completely and go oversize with the hole and then install a "helicoil" which is an extra set of threads that screws into the hole and then the bolt threads into that.
I thought the service intervall on the trannys was 100,000 miles?

Normally it is. Dodge warranties requires a decreased interval if you tow a lot. At least on my Ram it's that way.

No kidding.
I spoke with them at 4pm yesterday and the shop foreman was working on it. I was told he would work on it till close at 6pm. I spoke with the service manager today (again I had to call) at 11:30 and was told a couple of more hours. Here it is nearly 3 hours later and still have heard from no one. All they do is say "we're sorry" no mention of my not having a car today or what they may do to make me a satisfied customer or how they might make up for all the inconvenience this is causing me..........:|:|

It used to be fairly common to provide a "loaner" which was usually a car off the used car lot or a rental that wasn't being used. Anymore with the liability that dealers have that is pretty much a thing of the past.

Well, it ended up they did a decent job of keeping a satisfied customer. They waived the entire charge for the tranny service ($149) and did a nice wash job on the car. You know crap happens and we all understand that but good communication is always the key. I wouldn't have gotten so mad if they just would have been upfront about the whole problem.

Probably had the air gun on "forward" and hit the button... I'd bet money on it.

RC You need to watch that tranny and fluid like a hungry hawk. I have a friend that took his C-5 special edition vette to Jiffy Lube for service. They put the wrong tranny fluid in which blew the tranny. The lawayers are now slugging it out.
