KAD 32 water strainer leak

I have my kad 32 engine on a pallet waiting to be fitted and its clear to see that at some time it has had a severe leak from the water strainer area,
I am guessing that this went unnoticed by the previous owner for some time,

the alternator works fine and there is some minor rust on the edges of the pulleys which i will deal with on the pallet,
Does anybody know exactly where the leak comes from, I hear its a common problem with this motor? has Volvo come up with anything to prevent it reoccurring other than ?12.76 for a new rubber seal in the cap? Thank you.

How would anyone else know, you are the one looking at it. Start it up and see where it leaks.

Not so easy when its sitting on a pallet.

Let me "Rephrase" the question

Does any body have any experience of this water strainer/pump leak on a KAD 32?

Personally, I wouldn't think of putting an engine back in a boat until I ran it and made sure everything was ok.
But, even if you don't run it, you can check the strainer and pump for leaks. First, remove the impeller and seal the cap back on.
Remove the hose from the inlet side of the fuel pump. Fab a hose with a hand air pump to it, on the outlet side of the sea strainer, disconnect the hose and plug the sea strainer. Now, pump up about 5 to10 psi of air to the pump. Use a spray bottle of soapy water on the pump and strainer and look for bubbles. That's YOUR leak.

If the cap on the sea water strainer leaks, replace the seal.

I hear its a common problem with this motor?

Have you asked the ones that you Heard this from where theirs leaked?
PS, it's not that common a problem, I worked on the 31 and 41 series engines all their life and only seen one leak for anything other than an old seal on the cap. It was cracked.
