Re: Kayaks

You could do a lot better than an OldTown. There are tons of kayak makers out there and just as many varieties of kayak from each company. How do you plan to use the kayaks?

Try http://www.rutabaga.com/ for info on some of the middle to higher end kayaks available.

You might want to look into build your own kayak kits. They are about 1/3 the price of a premium fiberglass kayak and when you're done you'll be proud to tell everyone you built it. They are beautiful mahogany boats and relatively easy to do. We did a triple cockpit kayak and it's awesome. I recommend Pygmy Boats.

He's absolutely right. Waaaay too many variables to consider. Kayaks come in all shapes, sizes and for a variety of uses. Whitewater or flatwater? Long distance or just foolin' around?
Your best move would be to go to a "Demo Day" offered by a local outfitter. they will have a variety of kayaks available for testing so you can find one that fits your needs- and your body. Remember- a kayak, regardless of its use, has to fit you properly. Too many people don't realize this fact and end up dissatisfied with the sport. Talk to the kayak outfitter and they will help with your decision.
