Looking at getting a keel guard for the boat, but the boat is trailered and the bow roller is right under the front where the keel guard would go...

Any thoughts??

Tallman

Re: Keel guard

Just let the air out of the tires, that should lower the trailer at least 3 inches. :)

Sorry, I couldn't resist.

Also sorry that I have no safe recommendations for you.

Is this on you cuddy cabin?
Or a smaller/lighter boat?

if it is a roller trailer you just need a few inches. Push it back. If you have a bunk, Get about 5 friends and push it back. ;)

Re: Keel guard

When I installed mine, I put a 12x12 block of wood along the keel behind where the guard was going ot be installed. I then jack it up just enough to take the pressure off the roller. I remover the roller and mount and I had clear access.

Re: Keel guard

The thing that I am worried about is how will the guard work when I bring the boat on the trailer at the ramp? Will it come off after use because of hitting the roller etc???

Tallman

That sounds like a good question to ask the manufacturer via email on their website.

Re: Keel guard

The install instructions say that you should mount it about 9" (If I remember correctly) from the bow eye. So you should not hit the edge of it with the roller.

They also say that the KG should not be resting on the roller when on the trailer. I found that an impossible instruction to follow without redsigning the rollers. What I did was to place the roller diffrently so that when the boat was up against the stop, not as much pressure was on the keel roller. I also made sure it rolled freely and didn't bind with weight applied. It's not perfect but after a year of launch/retrieval/ and sitting on the trailer it looks just fine..
