So I was looking at a few spots on the chines that need to be filled in eventually and noticed that the gelcoat has rubbed off on the keel. I am assuming becasue it has been beached for the last 20 years. So my question is for now do I get a keelguard to protect the fiberglass or do I need to use something like Marinetex first? I am heading out this week for a trip. Do I need to keep it off the beach and pay for a moorage spot?

Re: Keel in need of help.

It doesn't look bad. I would fill in the chipped areas with some thickened polyester resin, then sand and use a brush on gel coat. Three layers of gel with sanding between should do it.

Don't use Marine Tex because the gel coat won't stick too well. Thats why I suggest filling the chips with thickened polyester in preparation for gel coat. If you don't have any traditional thickeners available (glass microspheres or silica) use wheat flour.

Its really no big deal m8..

You can beach it if you like with no probs.

You could keel guard it or do what Mark said.
