I have a Standard Horizon CP175c....seems decent, but fairly old. Has NT+ maps in it now. Now that said, this IS updateable to use MAX maps, and from my limited knowledge they are quite a bit better? So do I spend 200 on new maps, or sell it, and buy a new system for 1000+ bucks? I'm not sure I know what I'll be gaining? Sure might be quicker, and maybe touch screen, but is there really that much difference for the extra money? Thanks

How old is yours? I don't like updating old units unless it's free, they don't tend to age well enough to put much money into them after a couple of years. Plus the newer units tend to be so much better for so much less $$ than what you probably paid for the old one.

The new units are light years ahead of a 2006 model, honestly I wouldn't put any money into it.

Newer isn't always better. Strip away all the gadgets and gizmos and nothing has change in GPS technology since then. Ya, the new chips have a faster update rate but what does that buy you? Nothing., unless your traveling at 10 times the speed you where before

My 2006 unit puts all the new, big box store stuff To shame. Runs latest maps and software. And get this, unlike "today's" disposable units, I can still get it repaired......

Map wise, when was the last time you saw a survey ship mapping the bottom of your favorite lake? map products are the cash cows of the electronics world

Well, I don't want to get in an argument with anybody, but sometimes newer is better. Weekend before last some friends and I went on our annual trip to the Turtle Flambeau flowage are and my best friend bought this little unit this spring. I can pretty much guarantee nothing from 2006 comes close to matching this bad boy.

Well sure , but there is no WAY I'm spending 3k on a GPS. The one I have is 6 or 7in , I'm just wondering how much better a 6 or 7in new one is over the old one, if I update the old one with new maps.......looks like don't get MAX maps, only base with a new one anyway. I think maybe I'll try have a go with this one and see how it works.

Bud, I really can't answer you on that. I bought a Humminbird Helix SI this spring which is the first GPS unit I've ever owned. I previously used a Lowrance X-65 fish finder that I bought in 2001. The Helix (about $500) is pretty nice but the highest level charts it can use are LakeMaster which only has a few lakes in HD and doesn't really provide a whole lot of detail. The Lowrance I linked uses Navionics and the detail is incredible, even on tiny lakes nobody has ever heard of. A lot of money, but if you have the 3 grand to spend, totally worthwhile, IMO.

dont see anything on that unit that mine doesn't support but....I see a lot the HDS doesn't support...;)

To be fair, you're trying to compare a combo unit to a commercial MFD. MFD are designed to support a multitude of options and configurations. I just installed a GSD 26 CHIRP sounder on it last year as backup to my Furuno sounder

The Garmin 8xxx MFD is the updated version of my unit

Well I got a deal(75$) on a C MAP MAX C card for the one I have, and it has WAY more detail now, huge difference. Only had a NT+ card in it. So this will work for now, this at least makes it livable.
