Keep spinning hubs

Hi all,

I have a OMC 5.7 with a 1.5:1 Cobra drive.

The boat came (when I bought it) with a 15.5 X 15P alum prop. The prop looked pretty dinged up so I planned on getting a new one but first I put the line on the hub and prop to see if the hub is spinning at all. It was. I didnt have any symptoms like slipping and letting go and high revs or anything but I took the prop and got it reconditioned and rehubbed and changed to a 17P.

I also bought a 14 3/4 X 17P Ballistic SS prop. I bought it from a marine surplus store and long story short I could t get it to go on because the hub wasnt pushed in enough. I had to take it to a prop shop and they put a new hub in it. I put it on the boat and about 5 hours of run time later it let go while underway at about 3500 RPM. I had to idle all the way back to the dock.

So then I took it back to the prop shop and they said they would rehub it for free but if it does it again its prob a problem with the hub cavity of the prop.

So I just put the alum back on and put about another 20 hours on it. I bought an apollo SS prop so I took the alum off and looked on the back of it and I can see the hub must be spinning again. Again I have no symptoms like before but I can tell its spun.

So, so far I have spun a 15.5 X 15P alum, 15.5 X 17P alum, and a 14 3/4 X 17P Ballistic SS.

I havent taken the boat out with the new Apollo yet but I plan to this weekend. the Apollo has the interchangeable hub so maybe it wont spin.

Is there anything that would cause this or am I just having bad luck with props?

Thanks

Re: Keep spinning hubs

First, the one that came with the boat was probably bad when you bought it, that one doesnt count.
The one that you bought and had to have fixed is probably a factory reject or blem that was purchased by a prop shop, rehubed and sold as a rebuilt that never had a chance of working correctly anyway. Sucks you got stuck with that one.
The third one is the same as the first one, so we are on prop 2 now. and good hub one.
Have the prop shop do a torque test on the hub, they are not solid and the prop will rotate around the hub some even under normal and extreme conditions (i know im going to hear it for saying that). If it did not move at least some, it would not move when it hit something.
