Keeping a frig out in the garage?

I picked up a used frig and put it out in my garage for beer and soda storage etc. Is there any downside to having a frig outside in the garage? Cold temperatures or high temperatures? Looks to be an R12 unit.

I have that the oil in the compressor can get pretty thick from the cold temps, which isn't good for them. I have had a deep freeze in my garage for almost a year and have not had any problems..............................yet.

I've had a freezer and fridge in the shop/garage for going on 10 years then I moved and the new location had them on a ground fault receptical and it would run fine for more than a year then trip and there was no way to know it'd tripped until you saw water running out of the freezer. Took them off that ciruit and I haven't had a problem since.

Yes, I have heard of this from a neighbor. Mine is plugged into GP outlet. He said that it could fry the outlet.

Man,

I have NO idea where you are.

My issues with garage fridges have been heat related. I live in AZ. My garage frequently reaches 140 degrees F. In other words, they don't last. I can tell you this. Ancient, American Built fridges from the fifties and sixties last the longest. "overbuilt" American technology is not all bad.

A NEW freezer has done fine. I guess it's because I don't open it that much. Once frozen, always frozen. New fridges have not fared so well.

If you are going to open it-allot, go with something-ANCIENT.

Here's a hint.

Once you MOVE an old fridge, give it, a day or two, for the oil and freon to settle. Once it does, it will run for years-again.

1 Downside is that When it's below Freezing in the Garage,......
It'll be Below Freezing In the Fridge as well.....

That'll be Pop-sycles,+ Beer-sycles......d:)

I'm close to St. Louis Missouri. My man concern wasn't the heat but rather the cold winter Dec-Feb.

In STL, you should be fine. I'd look for the "old stuff." It just plain works better.

It will be fine.
Do the temps in the garage ever get below freezing?
Maybe at the floor, for brief period when the garage door is opened.
If you are worried about it, place the fridge on a wooden box about 15" high.
That will keep the cold air from the compressor.

Secure if from falling.

Good ideas, by Roscoe

STL is NOT frigid, or HOT.

Elevating the unit is never a bad idea.

If you have a serious cold snap, stuff will freeze, Otherwise, an old unit will keep the adult "POP's"-- COLD.

I have an old fridge in mine for about 5 years now with n/p.
I keep mine up on 8" blocks and it does just fine.

Re: Keeping a frig out in the garage?

I have a 20yr old fridge in the garage........been there for 10 years now. Not a single issue whatsoever. Last Winter the coldest temp was -25F and the Warmest summer temp was about 100F.

The garage is roughly 10 degrees warmer than outside. Even when it is freezing outside, stuff inside the fridge does not freeze usually. It would have to be pretty cold for an extended time for that to happen. Lots of insulation in a fridge.
