This is first boat I have keep in water for long period. I have been raising motor out of water as far as it will go. I noticed other boats have their motor down. Which is correct and why?

Thanks,

Al

Re: Keeping motor out of water

I would keep the motor out of the water ANY TIME I could.

You reduce/prevent growth of critters/slime/algae and corrosion etc by doing this.

Having said that, if you have ANY pooled water in the lower unit, you want it (the water that is!!) out of there during freezing wx to prevent breaking the lower unit.

Re: Keeping motor out of water

If you are moored in salt water, galvanic corrosion can take it's toll on the lower unit, while moored. For non-freezing weather, the suggestion is that if you can get the gearcase all the way out of the water, then do it. If you cannot get it all the way out, make sure the zinc anode is in the water to protect it. Some transom brackets have zincs on them so you can tilt it up as far as possible and it is still protected. In freezing weather, leave the gearcase down so water doesn't freeze inside it when tilted.

Fresh water, tilt it up in non-freezing weather. Down in freezing weather.
