My father and I recently bought a 1989 vasserret with either a 1985 or 1986 150 mercury black max xr2. when we bought it we knew something was wrong with the motor which was fine because we were going to fix and sell the 150 and put on a 200 we had. first time out it did not run right so we took it home an saw the stater was melted. after replacing that we took it out again to test it and it ran good for about 15 minutes untill it became doggy, and when we removed the cowel we could tell the stater had melted again because of the smell. so we took the boat to a marina to see what was wrong and they thought maybe it was the flywheel or the crank had been damaged and was spinning in an oblong circle causing too much friction with the stater. so they checked the crank and that was fine, so they replaced the flywheel. after testing it out it melted another stater. at the marina they had a spare motor to run to see if they could find the problem so they completely swaped motors, harness, flywheel, everything, they spent 5 hours rebuilding the motor and took it out and it melted another stater. so now it has to be something electrical in the boat right? well any information you could offer would be greatly appreciated.
keep in mind i am only 16 but i do have some knowledge about boats because i have been raised on them.

Re: keeps melting staters

Were any of the electronics transferred to the other engine? Like switchbox? Rectifier? Trigger?

If not I would first go to the keyswitch and check it. It could be transferring voltage to the stator when it should not be. Cant remember I think its either a orange wire or a black/yellow wire. Get a wiring diagram for that engine. Ohm out the wires to the engine with the key on and then off. The same wire Im thinking of is also connected to the mercury switch. This wire grounds out the engine to cut it off. Check for voltage on this wire with the key on. It should not be their.

Also when you get it running again keep an eye on the voltage to the battery. Dont let it go over 16 volts.

Never use an ohm meter (multi meter in ohm setting) on a powered circuit! Disconnect the battery first (turn off the disconnect switch or pull the wires from the battery). Otherwise you'll fry your meter.
