My father and I recently bought a 1989 vasserret
with either a 1985 or 1986 150 mercury black max xr2.
when we bought it we knew something was wrong with the
motor which was fine because we were going to fix and
sell the 150 and put on a 200 we had. first time out
it did not run right so we took it home an saw the
stator was melted. after replacing that we took it out
again to test it and it ran good for about 15 minutes
untill it became doggy, and when we removed the cowel
we could tell the stator had melted again because of
the smell. so we took the boat to a marina to see what
was wrong and they thought maybe it was the flywheel
or the crank had been damaged and was spinning in an
oblong circle causing too much friction with the
stator. so they checked the crank and that was fine,
so they replaced the flywheel. after testing it out it
melted another stator. at the marina they had a spare
motor to run to see if they could find the problem so
they completely swaped parts, harness, flywheel,
everything, they spent 5 hours rebuilding the motor
and took it out and it melted another stator. so now
it has to be something electrical in the boat right?
well any information you could offer would be greatly
appreciated.
