It may be as simple as adjusting the shift shaft and linkage, or may be a worn clutchdog or gear.
A repair manual will walk you thru the adjustment process for your engine.

A gear or clutchdog replacement will require dis-assembly fo the lower unit.

It will get worse, the longer you run it in this condition.

I'll second what Roscoe said, that definitely sounds like a worn clutch dog/forward gear. You'll have to pull the gearcase apart to check, but I'm guessing when you separate the clutch dog from the forward gear you'll see that both are wearing away on the trapezoidal cogs where they connect.

Re: Keeps poping out of foward gear!

I would certainly try adjusting the linkage first, which can be a small pain, but nothing NEAR so complex as rebuilding the entire lower unit.

I recently had a similar problem, but rather than out of gear, it would pop IN to reverse when it was supposed to be in neutral.

The problem was in the adjustment. When the neutral start switch was engaged, the linkage was actually about 1/8 inch from engaging in reverse, and I couldn't even shift into foward. The shift mechanism wasn't centered correctly with the linkage and neutral switch. The adjustment was only two bolts, but it took nearly an hour to adjust because of the location.

If you think about a scale from 1-10, where 5 is your neutral switch, you might be engaging into reverse at 4, but then have to go all the way to 10 to engage in foward. You need to adjust the linkage to center it back to 2 and 8 where it belongs.

If you slowly turn the prop by hand, while shifting the linkage between foward and reverse, you can "feel" where it engages. Make sure your linkage is centered properly.
