Key stuck in ignition

My ignition switch is panel mounted, off, start, run, push to choke and the motor is 2003 75hp merc. Went to take key out of ignition switch....just put in couple of hours before..and it is stuck. Not stuck with debris but stuck as in a tumbler must have dropped into a groove and it won't budge. Still works fine but need to be able to remove key for obvious reasons. Pulled off panel and looked at switch....pecked with screw driver, sprayed WD-40...still stuck. There is a small hole near the back of switch and you can see a brass ring of some sort that rotates when you turn the key. Stuck an ice pick in hole to see if it would release key...no help. Anyone had a problem like this?

I'll have to cut the key near the switch even to replace as the round part of key is too big to go through the panel hole. A lot of wires to remove and replace so I would rather get the key out if at all possible. Thanks in advance.

It happens, all you can do is either hire a locksmith or replace the ignition switch, I can tell you the quickest and cheapest route is to simply replace the switch, it will take you less then an hour, so simple a caveman can do it

I agree with replacing. Headed to boat dealer in a few to check on a new switch.

Good Luck!

Purchased new ignition switch at boat dealer for $19.95.......was careful to remove wires from old to new switch one set of wires at a time so not to cross wire. Completed in about 20 minutes total and works perfect now. That had to save a few bucks! Thanks!

Will do and one last thing. Before I started to install switch I took the ground wire from battery.........didn't have to worry about hot wires that way.

Okie, hang around with me long enough and I will have you not worrying about the rookie stuff! I tell people to take the ground wire off so they don't poop their pants, in reality I don't do it unless I am in tight quarters!
