Just bought a replacement motor and it didn't come with a key, so I'm not sure what type I need. The metallic retaining nut on the switch indicates KF series, but the motor year indicates 73 pistol grip series. Additionally, I can find zero indication what number I need, if there was a key number on the switch it looks to be gone now.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Well if the number is not on the switch, you are SOL unless you find a dealer with a master set of keys to try. It's not like there are only a few. I used to have a chain of at least 50 keys and still often didn't have the right one.

A "real" locksmith can probably key it for you. But finding a real locksmith isn't easy these days. I'm talking about the guy that can open a safe, not the kid at the lumberyard.

Hmm that's a bummer. Oh well, I'll figure it out. The problem is that someone tried to drill out the screws that hold the throttle box together and I'm not sure if the thing will come apart-- if I had to replace the keyswitch. At worst I guess I could bypass the switch and install a run switch and push-button start and choke. Would love to not have to do that tho.
Thanks for the reply .

The KF key series was used up through the 73 model year. The piston grip "73" series keys ran from 73 to 76, so you should have a pistol grip type key if you have an original 74 control box. (unfortunately, they can be easily swapped between engines.) Those keys were numbered (stamped) 1-35. The key number is usually heat-stamped on the threaded barrel of the key.

Okay, on VERY close inspection it looks like it's stamped 58, but I can't be sure, plus it's impossible if it's a pistol key. The numbers are fairly smudged out so I guess I'll take a shot at 28 and see what happens, it's only 13 bucks.
Thanks
