Key wont turn engine over

Hi! Fort time poster, long time lurker.

Firstly, boat is a 94 bayliner classic 2252.

Engine is a 4.3 mercruiser alpha one gen two. Serial numbers are: engine - 0F118668, transom - 0F189361, Drive - 0F169019.

I acquired this boat through a trade. Everything was running decent and I discovered that the ujoint bellows was disconnected from the drive. It was making a lot of grinding noise while turning and in lower trim positions. I removed the drive and replaced the gimbal bearing and ujoint bellows. Repairs went fine.

The shifting was a little stiff, so I decided to take the lower shift cable out while I had the drive off and it was fine from what I could tell. I also decided to take the shifter apart and make sure that the shifter wasnt the problem. The shifter is a quicksilver 3000 series. I put everything back together, put the drive back on and went to turn the key and absolutely nothing happened. No click, no crank, just the fuel pump priming. I could see that when I turn the key the voltage drops a little on the battery gauge. After googling and youtubing, I found out I can jump the two poles of a solenoid together to try to start the engine. I tried that and the engine started right up.

What I believe the problem is, is that the boat thinks it's in gear and wont try to start.

I do have the Seloc manual for my engine.

So, my questions are:
1. Since I took the throttle handle and shift cables off, how do I know where neutral is exactly on the throttle handle?
2. Is there any other tests that I can do to eliminate / confirm an issue?

When I jump the two wires on the solenoid to get the engine to turn over, I have to have the key turned to the on position to actually run

If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, it would be greatly appreciated and I will elaborate more if needed.

Thank you all in advance.

Turn the key to the START position and hold it there. Move the throttle lever on the control and see if you pick up as point where the starter engages... Alternatively, just shirt out the 2 wires going to the control box and see if the engine cranks.

I do have the Seloc manual for my engine.

Excellent. You have a knee pad... Get a hold of the genuine factory service manual. seloc is useless!

Thank you achris. I'm not sure what you mean by the control box. Is that different than the solenoid on the engine that I shorted out to get it to start?

If holding the key to start and moving the shifter a tad fwd/rev does not cause the motor to crank, find the slave solenoid on the motor.

Slave Relay 89-96054T.jpg

Jump across the 2 top contacts to see if the motor cranks. If it does crank, then measure the voltage on the small terminal below the larger ones on the yellow/red wire. Turn key to start to see if you get 12V. If 12V is present, check for ground on the other small terminal which has a black wire. If connections and power are correct you need a slave solenoid

If no power, check for 12V at the key on the same color wire when it is moved to start.

Thanks for the info. When I jumped those two terminals yesterday, the engine did crank fine but I had to turn the key on to get it to start. Today when I jump the terminals all I hear is a whining noise but no cranking of the engine

Thank you Chris. The switch in the control box has come loose and isnt making contact when the shifter is moved. Is there anywhere that you know of that can help me put the control box back together? A few parts fell off when I opened it up and dont know where they go or what they do. The box says quicksilver 3000 series on it, and when I google that a different shifter comes up.

There are way to many shifters on that page and yet I dont know which one. The only other numbers I find on the box are 822195c1. When I google that it comes up as just the box not the whole shifter.

how hard would it be to just buy a new shifter? Can I just buy any one? Or is there a specific one that I'll need to buy?

Your control box is 2 seperate parts. The bit you see with the lever you move, and the mechanism behind it.

3000 series is no longer sold, it's been replaced by the 4000 series, and they use different control cables....

In that list AD gave you, your control box will be "modular components" and you'll have to work out which design (1,2,3, or 4)....

I would suggest calling seastar between 8-430pm EST and ask them what they would suggest. I went online to find some info and did find it, but its not real clear

For the most part most controls will work its the cable ends that are the issue. This is why suggest call and talk to the folks. There are cheaper models like uniflex that will also work
