Hi! Fort time poster, long time lurker.
Firstly, boat is a 94 bayliner classic 2252.
Engine is a 4.3 mercruiser alpha one gen two. Serial numbers are: engine - 0F118668, transom - 0F189361, Drive - 0F169019.
I acquired this boat through a trade. Everything was running decent and I discovered that the ujoint bellows was disconnected from the drive. It was making a lot of grinding noise while turning and in lower trim positions. I removed the drive and replaced the gimbal bearing and ujoint bellows. Repairs went fine.
The shifting was a little stiff, so I decided to take the lower shift cable out while I had the drive off and it was fine from what I could tell. I also decided to take the shifter apart and make sure that the shifter wasnt the problem. The shifter is a quicksilver 3000 series. I put everything back together, put the drive back on and went to turn the key and absolutely nothing happened. No click, no crank, just the fuel pump priming. I could see that when I turn the key the voltage drops a little on the battery gauge. After googling and youtubing, I found out I can jump the two poles of a solenoid together to try to start the engine. I tried that and the engine started right up.
What I believe the problem is, is that the boat thinks it's in gear and wont try to start.
I do have the Seloc manual for my engine.
So, my questions are:
1. Since I took the throttle handle and shift cables off, how do I know where neutral is exactly on the throttle handle?
2. Is there any other tests that I can do to eliminate / confirm an issue?
When I jump the two wires on the solenoid to get the engine to turn over, I have to have the key turned to the on position to actually run
If anyone has any suggestions or ideas, it would be greatly appreciated and I will elaborate more if needed.
Thank you all in advance.
Bill
