Should I keep the vent on this 3 gallon steel tank closed tightly when I'm not using the kicker regardless if I?m out on the water or the boat's in my driveway covered - or should I keep it vented?

I keep mine opened slightly. It prevents the tank from expanding like a balloon when it gets hot.

I always kept mine a little open to allow the tank to inhale and exhale as the temperature requires.

I use plastic tanks & always left 'em open except when carrying them around - all kinds of weather, never had a problem. Fuel sometimes seeps out the fittings if I close the vent and the temp rises. Steel tanks can hold the pressure, though.

An answer to a question you didn't ask...those steel tanks will start to rust after 35 years or so, just from the moisture in the fuel - I never tried to find a solution but I bet there is one.

Greg, On a steel tank you may close it tight to keep evaporation down.
