I picked up a 10 HP kicker this past winter. Mechanic said to mount it so that, in down position, cavitation plate on kicker was about 1" below bottom of transom. Any ideas on how close/far from main motor this should be? Any other suggestions?

Make sure that when the main engine is in full turn position that it doesn't hit the kicker and vice versa.

I like the kicker mounts that you can adjust up and down from the boat with a lever. In shallow water you can lift it way up or put it lower for normal use. In addition to what Cobra 3.0 said make sure you can pivot the kicker both directions for steering. Some transoms with a low cut out will limit your steering ability.

Get one of those brackets that lift up when not in use.
