Kicker Prop Recommendations

I'm using my early 70's Evinrude 9.5 for a kicker on my walleye boat. I believe I currently am running a 7 1/4" prop (pin drive, not thru hub exhaust). I would like to find a prop that will drive the boat at a good trolling speed (2.5 mph) without excessive engine RPM. My current prop makes me run the motor a bit more than I think I should have to. Would going with more pitch and diameter make any difference?? I was thinking of going to an 8 1/4" 8 pitch or similar. It has the factory prop which is in OK shape, but itis an old design that has no cup to the blades. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

Re: Kicker Prop Recommendations

I really wouldn't worry about the speed of the engine, I run my 6hp rude at about the "start" mark on the tiller handle trolling 2mph on my 16' boat. Down side with a higher pitch is you may have trouble slowing it down enough and it will lug the motor more leading to excess carbon buildup.

Re: Kicker Prop Recommendations

I just would like a little lower engine speed to keep it a bit quieter. It's not bad if you are sittingup in the baot, but running the engine it is tougher to hear conversation, etc. Also thought I might get a tad better fuel mileage as well. I'd like to go down to a 3 gallon tank but I don't think under my current setup I will have enoughfuelfor a full day of trolling. I was afraid of loading the motor too much with the bigger prop, as well as not being able to slow down. I can get well under 1 mph right now, which is nice. Just wonder how much it would change things. WOuld updating to a newer style prop of the same pitch have any effect??
