Trying to add a 9.5 johnson short shaft kicker to my boat. It already has a transom jack on the boat. The problem I'm having is because it's a short shaft I have to let the transom jack down with places the back of the kicker leg about 5-6" behind the main motor leg. I assume that when set up the steering link should be paralell with the back of the boat when both motors are straight, is this correct. If so I am guessing that I need to attach the link to the rear of the leg and extended it back on the main motor 5-6 inches to make it parralel. I tried hooking a link right to the rear of each motor and I lost full steering on the main one. I need to go back to HS for geometry lessons.

Re: Kicker steering and setup

My boat is not exactly the same, but it should be the same general idea. I have an IO, and a 15 hp long shaft kicker on a motor plate like yours. I have my steering link attached at all times (to risky to lean over the back that far in lake Erie) I have an easy steer system, and it telescopes with little indents to hold it in place. When I have the kicker in the up position, the little engine is all out of wack with the main one. I don't care because it's up. When I put the little motor down, I crank the wheel all the way to the right (my kicker is on the starboard side, you would do the opposite) this "sets" it in the right position. When I'm done for the day I just pull the motor up and the ez steer extends to allow me to run back in. If you have a solid rod between the two, you'll need to connect and disconnect when the kicker is down, or else you'll have problems. I suggest if you don't have one already you at least purchase the ez steer rod. I got mine off fleebay cheap, it only came with the rod and the attachment for the kicker motor, but they use air quick connects, so about 15 min with the welder and I had the mount for my main motor. You could make something without a welder for your setup if you don't have one.
