What's a good size motor for a 22' Say Ray?
I'm assuming a short shaft?
What older make(s) are good?
I'm looking at buying something light & cheap....
There are a bunch on Craigslist.....
Are there any that I should avoid completely?
I really don't know anything about 'em........:)

Re: Kicker/Troller Motor

Ahoy, Bro Haut.

I think a 22' needs about 15-18hp, minimum to be a useful auxillary as well as for trolling. For trolling only you can get by with a JohnnyRude 3 or 4hp. Best little outboard ever made.

The JohnnyRude 15s of the 70s to 90s are very good, lighweight engines and can be had with electric start if you want it.

If you go over the 15, then I suggest JohnnyRude 20-25.

Long or short shaft? Depends. You will probably want to use a kicker mount that can lift it clear of the water, so you just mount that according to the engine you get.

Avoid Chrysler, Force and any air cooled or off brand outboards.

Good luck. :)

You will definitely want a long shaft (20"). This is the measurement from the clamp to the cavitation plate. A short shaft would keep your motor pretty close to any waves when in the down position. It also might make manual steering difficult if you choose not to tie your main outdrive steering to the kicker motor. Since a kicker motor will not plane your boat, there is little sense in getting more than 5 HP. I just bought a 5HP long shaft 20" Tohatsu for $1,100 including taxes and shipping.

As JB stated, you might want to consider going higher than a 5HP if it is your auxilery motor...I know tides in your area can move quite quickly and if you top out at 5mph in a lake with a 5HP, you could be moving backwards going uptide that is moving 6mph. That would not be cool.

We live in the same area and everybody uses 9.9s or 15s for boats that size, you can get by with a smaller one but it can get difficult to conrtol the boat in waves or wind. If you need to, you can get a high thrust prop for better control. Now if you want the best kicker, get a Yamaha T8, thats what what almost everybody gets here when buying new.
stay away from the smaller single cylinder models, they are much louder and vibrate more than 2 C models.

And only a long shaft.

And you can get the T8 with power tilt.

Yes to power tilt and also electric start. If you want the ultimate setup, you get a TR1 Gold auto pilot for the small motor too. You just set the course and speed and it will controll all functions to follow it, even through wind, waves and current.
