I'm going to go look at a 1969 Mercury 7.5 tiller motor. He said it hasn't been started since 1992 but has been inside. What can I do make sure its worth buying. He wants $100.00

Re: Kicker

Take along a compression tester
spark plug wrench
spark tester.

First turn the motor over by hand to ensure that it hasn't rusted the piston rings to the cyl.

Remove the plug, attach the spark tester and compression tester and stir, see what you get.

Compression may not be ideal, some surface rusting of the cyl may reduce ring seal, if so, it's a crapshoot, will it wear off and reseat the rings, or will it wear the rings down and need at least a hone and re-ring if not a bore and new piston(s).

If spark is there and reasonable compression then you can be pretty sure a good carb clean, fuel pump kit and impeller, and LU oil it should work.

Re: Kicker

Thanks for information, the motor would not turn over at all. It was stuck. And I walked away!
