I bought a Merc 1250 and the lower unit is in pieces from someone replacing the impeller and not knowing how to get into it. They started disassembly at the prop and finally made it up to the water pump. I could really use some kind of a parts breakdown for reassembly and ordering missing parts. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Try Oldmercs.com or Google it. They have the information you are looking for, (I think).

BTW: most lower units on the inline6s and inline4s bolt right up. The gear ratio of yers is 2:1 (I think), the early 1970 and maybe 1971 inline6s had 1.78 to 1, (Scaaty's 1350 may have that 1.78 ratio too), and some of the 4s had 2.3 to 1. Look in any Seloc manual for the various gear ratios, as I am guessin' from memory. They will all bolt up and then you can change the prop if ya can't find the most common gear ratio which is 2:1 as yers had when it was stock. Complete parts motors, (with good lower units) are $100 to $200 on Craigs List here in God's Country, (maybe a little later in the year or early next year).

Thanks for the good info on the lower unit. I went back today to the crime scene (place of disassembly) and gathered up the remaining parts. I am sure I now have all the parts needed to put it all back together now. shifter shaft is damaged badly and will need replaced, but all the other parts are in good, serviceable condition. (except for the impeller) as soon as I figure out how to put the shifter back together I'll be in business!

Boy o boy is Scaaty right about that. I've tried to stay away fer months, ('course the prices are tooooooo high in the summer [fer boats n' marine stuff]).

The Seattle area has lots of Black Boat Anchors fer sale real cheap in the winter months, I bought a bunch of gooooooood junk late last and early this year.

The Portland area is a bit higher priced but they can get desparate too, (I bought a GREAT 1969 1000 short shaft fer $350, [the guy started at $1000 outa Vancouver WA just North of Portland], so ya sometimes have ta let 'em sit n' ripen fer a bit n' don't act too interested 'till ya show up with some cash ta check 'em out). Kinda like chasin' purdy girls. Great sport! :D:D Parts motors with GREAT cornplete lower units n' wirin' n' starters et al fer $100 to $200. I'm gonna have ta strip all me old girls to create more room before I start huntin' this and early next year.

I don't know where you are from, but large Metro areas near the water are great places to fish fer old Mercs. the Great Lakes would fetch non salt water ones, (dunno 'bout the prices up there). My overpriced $.02 JR
