I have a 1988 Dyna Trak 180 ss with a 1988 Evinrude 150xp model # E150STLCCA I was wondering are the Neutral and kill switch or key in off tied together in series or are they separate in the controls? or when the key is in the off position is it and the safety switch tied together in series? The reason I ask is I believe that I have a faulty kill switch I ended up cutting the wire at the switch itself and separated both wires and I don't get any spark if I go to the motor itself and unhook both connectors on both sides with the black wire and yellow tracer then the motor will fire right up. So I am assuming that I have a wire grounded somewhere from the big red plug back to the controls itself. So why I was wondering if any of these are in series to kill the motor. I have a Selco manual but it dosnt really show much on that. Thanks for the help.

Most marine ignition "KEY" switches short out the two "M" terminals to kill the engine. And most "KILL" switches are usually paralleled with those two key switch M terminals as well. Not serried...

The "neutral" switch has nothing to do with the "kill"switch. The neutral switch just prevents starting the engine (disables the starter) unless the throttle/shift lever is in neutral.

Neutral safety switch is in series on the crank wire, preventing the solenoid from engaging an sometimes, this will work even when the shifter is in the neutral position, because of mis-alignment (if it has a lever)or an internal problem. Kill switches are often a series connection on the wire that energizes the coil or ignition module. Others, as mentioned, short two wires in a harmless way.

Get a manual.
