I have the standard up is run down is off switch on my throttle controls. My question is when I remove the lanyard the knob stays up in the run position, is it suppose to be spring loaded? I can move the knob up and down freely but it stays in whatever position I leave it in. It seems the Lanyard does nothing.what's wrong here? Thanks

Its a $5 switch with a $10 lanyard. Spend the $15 and replace it

So is it suppose to always return to the down/off position with lanyard removed?

No. It stays in the position you put it in, either up or down.
When the lanyard loop is installed on the switch in the up position it will stop the motor if it gets pulled out.
You then reinstall it and go again.

Yes I realize this now. This is a new used boat and the guy had a key from a Yamaha I believe which did nothing. I now see the mercury takes a loop key which makes it all make sense now. Thank you
