Kill Switch (lLANYARD TYPE) installation issue

I have the one with the 2 wires coming out of it, red and black. I have black going to common ground and red going to M ( magneto I guess). I think this is correct but what happens is the opposite. With lanyard installed it won't start but if I disengage the lanyard it starts right up. Common sense says to switch the connections but it is a bit of a hassle. So what did I do wrong ?

Thanks

Just swapping the connections won't change a thing. You apparently have a kill switch that opens in the "kill" position, you need one that closes. Some kill switches give you both options (they have 4 terminal tabs on then).

(Ignition, gray cap): Circuit is normally closed (complete) with lanyard clip in place on switch. When lanyard is pulled and clip is removed from switch, circuit is open (not complete), resulting in interruption of current to ignition and shutting off engine.
One day you'll look back at this & smile.

Really ??? Really ???

Mine looks just like this and has a GRAY CAP !!! The lanyard is different though. It is a cord. I bought this several years ago and this boat has been an ongoing project. I think I somehow got a mixed up part.

If your explanation of what is happening is accurate...yes...really.

You can substitute ANY OEM part with one that is the same in form, fit, and function...and you casn often save some real $$$$.
But the responsibility is on you to make sure that you have done the homework if you go off the page so that you are using the right item..
If by chance you got this at an OMC Dealer, they should take it back and exchange it for the correct part.
