I have a chance to buy a working 1989 Evinrude 8 with the stop switch in the tiller handle. I was told the stop switch is bad and that they had to cut the wires for the motor to run. I can buy a stop switch but it costs 98.00 which is more than the motor and probably not worth it. Can I just defeat the stop switch and add my own? Thanks.

Re: Kill switch

Any switch will do, a toggle switch with do, a momentary switch will do. If you can find a used one that would even be better. Test it with a meter first to determine if it is bad. If you can buy an 89 evinrude 8hp for less than 98.00 buy 2 of them, cause they can't be had that cheap in my neck of the woods.

Re: Kill switch

Could be a broken wire, I never take what people "tell me" seriously, always check for myself. All a kill switch does is either ground out the coil(s) or the powerpack, depends on the motor, yours should be a powerpack. I have seen where the motor is reassembled and the ground pin doesn't go back into the connector properly, goes above it in the rubber connector and will never work. Pull the power pack connectors off and inspect.

And that's a lanyard type kill switch , it is the opposite of a push momentary type, the lanyard has to be on the end of the switch in order for the motor to run, pulling the lanyard off the switch kills the motor.

Re: Kill switch

Thanks. Here's a pic that he sent to me. With my luck it will be sold by the time I get there!

Re: Kill switch

Looks like the switch is completely gone! The 2 wires hanging out are for the kill switch, he must touch them together to shut it off. Just buy an aftermarket lanyard for atv's and mount it on the tiller handle, problem solved.

What does he want for it if you don't mind me asking?

Re: Kill switch

It would not surprise me if he lost (or never had) the lanyard which if not in place will not allow the motor to start. Perhaps all you need is a lanyard and reconnect the wires. You can make the lanyard yourself. I sure hope the motor proves good. I would like to get an 8 that cheap. Here is a little information regarding the eight. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: Kill switch

I'd pick it up for that, put a switch in, clean it up and sell it for $400, that's a steal if it's in good shape.

Re: Kill switch

I got it for 75.00!

The tiller handle is all there. He just split the wires and removed it. The motor looks really good but will need a carb job and water pump because it's been sitting for awhile. Fortunately, I have the OMC Service manual (for a different year, though). Does the throttle turn or go in/out?

Thanks!

Re: Kill switch

Excellent deal. I'd buy as many as I could at that price. I had an '89 8hp long shaft on my sailboat and sold it for $400-$500 I believe. I forget now.
