Hi Guys,

I just had a new cone clutch put in this outdrive last fall and now the drive will slowly drop down after an hour or so. I've heard that the rams are common culprits but I can't find seal kits anywhere. Does anyone have any idea on where to order parts through? Also, is there some way to prove they're bad? I don't see fluid anywhere around the pump or coming out of the cylinders on the rams. Any schematics/part diagrams are greatly appreciated because I can't seem to find any. It is on a 1991 Four Winns Liberator with a omc 350.

Thanks alot guys!!

To isolate internal leak location:

Tilt drive all the way up.
Lower it an inch or two.
Disconnect fittings at rod end of each cylinder (no, the drive won't fall)
catch spilled oil in a pail

Watch the open fittings as the drive drifts down- if fluid is coming out port side port, leakage is in port side cylinder
If fluid is leaking out starboard port, the leakage is in starboard cylinder
If fluid is coming out neither cylinder, it's leaking back through the valving in the pump.

Four Winns Liberator
I have one of those! Nothing like a "Lib"!

A little more info would help greatly. There were 5 models of 350 (5.7L) Cobra in 91 (if yours is indeed a 91) 4 were "Dogs", 1 is a "Cone"

If that's a 1991 cone clutch drive, you have likely have 574BPERGD 1991
trim and seal kit is OMC# 0985060 (and it looks like that kit fit many different year/model trim cyls)

Go to BRP -- Parts Catalogs and find your model (part) number for the kit, and then "google" the part number ("OMC 0985060") I found several at many different marine parts sites.

Once you determine if it is actually the trim cyls, you can rebuild them (if you can get them apart) If they're corroded, you might need to replace them.

If it's the pump, you may be able to rebuild the pump. I also found the valve body seal kit OMC#0508166

There's a LOT of used pumps on ebay and elsewhere.......I practically GAVE mine away........

Cheers,

Man, you guys are the best. It is in fact the portside cylinder but I took them both off to rebuild right away. It is the cone clutch model, I still have the old one on my toolbox at work as a reminder on how expensive boats are. What oil do I put back in and how do I bleed the air out? Thanks again guys!!!! :)

Where did you find those part numbers? A couple bushings were shot when I removed the cylinders and I'd like to order those right away too. Thanks

Up ^^^^^^ there where it says "BRP -- Parts Catalogs" just click the link (leave email address blank), click the drop-down menu, "Sterndrive", year, model, etc. I don't think you can really order parts directly from BRP, but once you have the actual OMC part numbers, you can google them and find them (or find out they're NLA)

Ordered the seal kits, any idea on how to bleed the air out. Will it self bleed back into the resovoir if I fill the cylinders after mounting them?

The entire system will self "bleed", might take a few up/dwn cycles for the bubbles to clear......
