King cobra NO forward

I have a problem with my 1993 454 king cobra not going into forward gear . I get reverse all the time but rarely forward anybody know whats up . Even if I try to shift from the cable that runs from the drive it will move the full amount of travel back and forth but still no reverse the cone clutch and gears seem to be fine . can anyone help ?

Well, I was going to say that you probably need a new shift cable.


You probably still need to replace it but you should also remove the drive so you can manually shift it.... and observe the linkage moving.

You have an "interim" cone clutch "King Cobra". It's no where near similar to the earlier King Cobra, and if I'm not mistaken, not the same as the newer (Joint) Volvo Penta/ OMC SX either.


Your year model number may be a 1992 if your boat is a '93. (boat manufacturers do that frequently)

In addition to the lower shift cable, you have some linkage in the upper housing that could be the problem....

In anycase, if you want to do anything yourself, you NEED to get the correct year model OEM service manual for your particular year and model number. (Clymer/Seloc won't cut it....use those for starting your wood stove!)
