When boat has not been running it shifts into forward with no problem. After being in use for a while, I'll shift to neutral but when I shift back to forward it does not engage. Reverse works fine, but no forward.

Checked cables from engine seem to be moving well. Motor oil?? Now that she's out of the water will try to see whats happening with the drive. It's a 1991 OMC 5.7 (Chevy) King Cobra. I'm hopeing its just an adjustment on the outdrive. It goes in reverse with no problem....

Drive oil clean as a wistle, emptied and refilled when I winterized.

Howdy,

There's 4 models according to BRP's parts site for 1991:

574APERGD 1991

574APLRGD 1991

574APRRGD 1991

574BPERGD 1991

The first one and last one are Cone clutch drives. The middle 2 are dog-clutch units.

Regardless of model, did you use the recommended OMC procedure for draining and refilling the drive oil?

OMC gave a lot of drives that moniker. It sounds like that one might an "interim" OMC cone clutch (Pre-Volvo SX) style drive.

Is there a "HUMP" in the top of the drive ?

Most people have had good luck with that drive but a failing lower shift cable can still cause problems with shifting.

If you did NOT re-fill it in accordance with the OMC service manual instructions, you may have damaged the drive. (filling it "wrong" can trap a large enough bubble inside that, when it finally works it way to the top, will cause the upper gears and bearings to run-dry)

What are your cold and warm idle RPM's?

Don't expect an answer, the original poster hasn't come back to the forums since the 24th.
Besides, he may not even have the same drive as you do, he never answered the question.

Re: King Cobra Won't shift into forward

For anyone else who has this problem with 1992 king cobra outdrive.....I've got the answer!!!!!! Natrully check shift cable and drive fluid....but my problem was a small part (not small in price about $400.00) found in the upper unit called the "clutch cone" and shims. Then all you have to do is find someone capable and willing to work on king cobras (most mechanics hate them) and NO MORE SHIFTING PROBLEMS!!!! Hope this helps anyone pulling their hair out :D
